O'Neil was a participant in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while he was still in highschool. Her performance on the show impressed panel of judges and she received a promotion to the 100th round. Her performance was highly applauded by judges. Her performance on the 7th September in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol immediately.
